Roman Polanski’s “Rosemary’s Baby” is a brooding, macabre film, filled with the sense of unthinkable danger. Strangely enough it also has an eerie sense of humor almost until the end. It is a creepy film and a crawly film, and a film filled with things that go bump in the night. It is very good.

“Rosemary gave birth to a cloven-hoofed infant,” wrote the film critic Pauline Kael, thumbnailing the plot, “her actor-husband having mated her with Satan in exchange for a Broadway hit.” For the record, we never see a cloven hoof, or even the baby, though we do hear it crying in its crib.

Rosemary deduces that Roman Castevet is an anagram for Steven Marcato, the son of a former Bramford resident and a reputed Satanist.

(SPOILERS) In the film Rosemary’s Baby, Rosemary meets her neighbour Terry who is residing with the Castevets. Later in the film, Terry kills herself. This was probably orchestrated by the Castevets, who are revealed as satanists, who could not use her drug abused womb to host the spawn of Satan.

Roman Polanski, director of 1968’s “Rosemary’s Baby,” invited reporters to Paramount to witness Sassoon cut the actress’ hair for her role in the film. The stylist was paid $5,000 for his work, but Frank Sinatra — Farrow’s soon-to-be ex-husband — was rumored to be furious with how short her hair was.

Terry’s death is never fully explained in the film. The only time the audience sees Terry alive, during the laundry room scene, she is wearing Mrs. Castevet’s antique pomander ball charm, filled with Tannis root. We see the same charm around Terry’s neck in the pool of blood by her dead body.

After being distant and cold to Rosemary, Guy decides he wants a baby—immediately. Rosemary is drugged with the desert Minnie has concocted, and her body is possessed by Satan. She unknowingly is impregnated with the Devil’s child. Rosemary learns she is pregnant.

Polanski aims to turn Rosemary’s bearing of the antichrist into a kind of satanic allegory of the immaculate conception. In this version, rather than becoming divinely impregnated by God, Rosemary/The Virgin Mary is impregnated by Satan.

Adrian is the name of Rosemary’s child. That role of masterminding the born of the devil’s son is more akin to Oliver Haddo role. Steven Marcato being a son of a Satanist fits perfectly with the theme of Haddo taking over bodies to live forever.

Good old classic suspenseful horror. Quality: Rosemary’s Baby is a very well made and suspense driven horror movie. It is too often today that movies rely on immense gore and loud jump scares to be effective, however Rosemary’s Baby manages to be scary without any gore or jump scares at all.
